A removable partial denture (RPD) is for a partially edentulous person who desires to have tooth replacement for functional or esthetic reasons, and who has opted not to have a fixed bridge or implants. It can also be used as a temporary replacement for missing teeth while other long term procedures, such as those mentioned above, are being planned and executed.

A transitional, or temporary, partial denture can be made of all plastic materials. A precision made long term removable partial denture usually has a metal framework and clasps to retain it in position and resist displacement by chewing forces.
